Persian Mythology
by mpb on March 1, 2008 10:02pm

The Persian mythology (specially Mithraism) have had a huge influence on Christianity among many other religions and cultures throughout the world and history. One interesting aspect is when the Romans copied Mithraism and thereby took over much of its content they also copied the names of various elements. Names which we today find in English and German vocabulary. Below is a short list which shows some of the names still in use in modern English

Old Parsi/Mithraist names                           Meaning                               English

Mâhshid                                                     Day of Moon                      Monday

Bahramshid                                                Day of TeeVis                     Tuesday

Titshid                                                        The Vedin Day                    Wednesday

Berjisshid                                                   Tour Day                             Thursday

Nâhidshid                                                   God of Fertility                     Friday

Keyvânshid                                                Day of Saturn                       Saturday

Mehrshid                                                    Day of Sun                           Sunday

Anyone interested in Persian mythology, start reading Professor John Hinnells “Persian Mythology” as an introduction. It’s short but precise and accurate!

I think he's asking how the word Keyvânshid turned into Shanbe...

I don't know how and why these words have changed. According Dr. Zartosht Ataollahi: "The Mithraist names of the days of the week have been maintained except for changes in the language (...)", that's all I know so far. I've even looked through Mary Boyce's books and another book by John Hinnells (Zoroastrian and Parsi Studies) and I haven't found anything yet! But I'll post if I found anything :-)

Ps. There's a book called The Mysteries of Mithras: The Pagan Belief That Shaped the Christian World” by Payam Nabarz, which I haven’t read yet! But I’m pretty sure he mention it in this book!

If people would actually understand what I meant when I said those names, I'd try my best to use those terms over what I use now. It really sucks that all this historical rape and influence has polluted our language.
